Meet Andy Galpin, Ph.D: Scientist, Coach, & Teacher
We sat down with Andy to discuss human performance and learn why he chose to partner with a supplement company for the first time in his career. Here's our interview.
Tell us about you and your key achievements.
I am currently a fully tenured professor at Cal State Fullerton; I'm the co-director of the Center for Sport Performance as well as the founder and director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory. Within those confines, our core mission is to produce and disseminate research that could potentially enhance human performance. I've been doing this for 11 years. I have an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, a Master's degree in Human Movement Sciences, and a Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics.
I teach senior and graduate-level sports, nutrition, human performance, muscle physiology, advanced strength and conditioning, sports science and topics in the areas of human performance. I also teach program design, where I put together training programs for athletes over the course of a year.
During my career, I have worked with many professional athletes across 14 professional sports. I've worked with all-stars, all-pros, Hall of Famers, MVPs, and Cy Young winners. I've worked with the occasional Hollywood actor as well.
What has driven your success?
One of the areas that has differentiated me is context. People always call me the 'context guy' or the, 'it depends guy.' Instead of just simply saying X is good for Y - whether that's a supplement or a training protocol - and where Y is an athlete type, or an age, or a situation, we need more context in that situation. We need more precision, and my goal is to get to the next level of understanding of coaching, where we really make things happen.
When you work with the type of athletes I have worked with in my career; precision is absolutely required because those athletes typically only get one opportunity. It's the difference between 'did you ever win a Super Bowl or an Olympic medal or not?' That level of precision is vital.
"I get asked daily for supplement recommendations, and for the first time in my 20-year career, I finally have an answer." - Andy Galpin, Ph.D
I teach folks that we don't want blanket recommendations. In fact, this is one of the reasons why I was so amicable to the Momentous partnership. I can show you slides from 2011 where I warned people in my nutrition class never to buy multiple-ingredient supplements. It's just such a bad idea to buy these stacks and pre-made mixes. You absolutely need to be able to titrate individual components. And the fact that this is almost exclusively what Momentous does is a huge, huge win and advantage. You can go through them one-by-one and either pull or add things or change the dosages based on your situation.
Even though the research says X grams of X supplement is optimal, maybe you're dealing with an individual who's three times the size or half the size or has other considerations. You need to be able to coach around those numbers a little bit. The more you can run little experiments and craft solutions and protocols based on those results, the greater advantage you're giving yourself and your individuals and clients.
What can we expect from this partnership?
I have tested almost every product with Momentous. I use several of them, and I have yet to have a bad review. I've used them with protocols. I know they work. People love them; it is high quality.
So what can you expect from our partnership? New protocols. I've put together a bunch of bundles, from the female athlete to basic starting stuff to jet lag. I've been using other protocols secretly for a long time with professional athletes. I'm so stunned that people aren't doing them because if you look across the literature, these protocols are very well established. They just haven't made it to people yet. Those things are all coming.
Momentous is a leading human performance company, and human performance is my jam. Moving the field forward is really what we're after with this partnership. Athletic performance and using science so that we're more precise is the goal; we are looking to achieve results more effectively and efficiently.
