The Ironman World Championship is known as one of the toughest endurance events, and this weekend Momentous athlete Cameron Wurf will be competing with one goal in mind—winning it.
Wurf, who’s been dubbed the world’s most versatile endurance athlete after elite careers in rowing, cycling, and now triathlon, said his preparation for the event has gone “pretty much exactly as planned.” He’ll be one of about 1,300 athletes competing at this Sunday’s race, which involves a 2.4-mile swim, 112 miles of cycling, and 26.2 miles of running. For the first time in the event’s history it will be held in Nice, France, instead of Kona, Hawaii.
Training Momentously
Wurf is an avid fan of Momentous products, regularly incorporating PR Lotion and Recovery into his routine. He said: “I’m really looking forward to race day. My preparation has gone well, I’ve done everything I’ve wanted to do. I’m healthy, I’m definitely feeling good. I genuinely can’t wait to get on that start line.”
As someone who competes professionally in two sports (Wurf rides for WorldTour cycling team Ineos Grenadiers while also racing on the Ironman circuit), it’s previously been challenging for the Australian to focus his swim, bike, and run training the way he’d like to for Ironman races, but that all changed back in June of this year when he decided to focus exclusively on this weekend’s Ironman World Championship.
“I’ve done all of my preparation at home in Andorra, doing all of the sessions I wanted to do,” he said. This training involved swimming more than 15 miles a week, running between 60 to 75 miles a week, and cycling more than 15 hours a week.
Recovery Is Key
When covering this kind of mileage it’s not surprising to hear that Wurf places huge importance on sleep, nutrition, and recovery.
“I have massage three or four times a week, and we always use PR Lotion as the base of the massage cream because of its recovery benefits,” he said. “After a hard day of training [using PR Lotion], I wake up the next day and feel like I can go and do it all over again.”
Wurf said that one of his major areas of focus during the build up to this race has been sleep quality. He’s been using Sleep Pack to help him get the most from his nightly rest.
He said: “I’ve been really happy with how I’ve been able to back up day after day, week after week, of big training. One big thing I’ve been focusing on is my sleep quality. Obviously you can work hard during the day but the gains are really made when you’re asleep. Using Sleep Pack I’ve just been waking up feeling fresher and like I can attack the day just as hard as I did the day before it, which has been crucial."
With such a high volume of run training, Wurf is also cognizant of the damage this can do to his joints, which is why he incorporates Collagen Shots into his daily routine. “You’ve got to make sure you’re taking care of your body,” he said. “Collagen is a daily supplementation for me.” And the treat he looks forward to at the end of every day is his chocolate recovery shake, which always includes chocolate flavor Momentous Recovery, frozen bananas, ice, Nutella, and rice milk. “It’s something I look forward to every day,” he said. “It signifies the end of my training sessions and reminds me of a great day’s work that I’ve done.”
He added: “There’s not too much more I can do now; the training is all done. It’s just time to go take the opportunity to see the fruits of my hard work. Bring on race day!”
All of the team at Momentous wishes Wurf the very best of luck at the Ironman World Championship!
